Joachim Schuler is Professor of Business Information Systems at Pforzheim University. He has been teaching Business Information Systems — Management & IT in the bachelor program since 1996, as well as in various master programs by focusing on transaction systems and business process management. He was able to gain research and teaching experience abroad at the Universidad del Pacifico in Lima and during a research semester at the University of Cape Town. On the one hand, he is involved in a large variety of research and practice-based projects, and on the other in social projects such as Vrygrond Computer Lab, which offers training and educational programs for people in Vrygrond, a township in Cape Town, in order to improve their life and work opportunities.
Joachim Schuler studied industrial engineering and management at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. He received his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) while being (employed) with the Research Center for Information Technology Karlsruhe by developing a concept for a computer-aided simulation model for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of alternative solutions when planning integrated technical information processing. As co-founder and managing director, he provided advisory services for the selection and introduction of Enterprise-Resource-Planning (ERP) and cashless payment systems after receiving his doctorate.

Joachim Schuler is concerned with how information and communication systems can be selected, introduced and operated. One of his main focus areas is the question of what should be done in order to successfully set up ERP introductory projects in small and medium-sized companies. Relevant topics include change management, project management, the involvement of executive management, and user training. Improving user training through the use of e-learning is especially dear to his heart because this activity is crucial for success when an ERP system is being introduced. Moreover, the results flow directly into his course “Introduction to SAP ERP”.
Joachim Schuler is currently working on ways to improve corporate communication through the use of enterprise social networks. Assuming that their benefits increase the more staff members use this communication tool, the question arises of which factors increase acceptance and which are more likely to hinder this. Lastly, Joachim Schuler is concerned with questions about the effects of the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 on corporate business processes and the resulting opportunities for the further development of e-commerce and e-business.
