Dominik Berbig has been Professor of Logistics Operations Management at Pforzheim University since 2021. He studied industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, and then worked as a research associate at the Institute for Material Handling and Logistics (IFL) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) where he earned his doctorate on the topic of developing a comprehensive approach for choosing proper load carriers. During his time at the IFL, he led different industrial and scientific projects with renowned partners, particularly in the automotive, pharmaceutical and warehousing sector.
Prior to his appointment, Dominik Berbig worked at Robert Bosch GmbH in different areas and functions. Among others, he was project manager worldwide for leveling, as well as senior manager for warehousing, packaging and transport in the Power Tools business unit. Most recently, he managed the area Intralogistics and Material Flow as part of the project to introduce SAP S/4HANA & SAP EWM in the Mobility Solutions business unit.

Dominik Berbig deals with issues of modelling, analysis and optimization of processes and functions in the field of warehousing, i.e. in particular the topics of storage, packing and order picking, as well as those in the area of transport optimization. Among other things, he is involved in the design, development and improvement of material flow concepts. This can be done, for example, through the targeted use of automated guided vehicles and autonomous mobile robots, state-of-the-art identification systems or technologies from the field of augmented reality, with which he was already involved before his time at Pforzheim University. Lean management methods are also applied here, for example value stream analyses or continuous improvement processes/kaizen.
His research interests include applying methods of operations research and queuing theory in order to identify corresponding implications and potential for improvement. Within the scope of the application of queuing theory methods, Dominik Berbig uses time-continuous as well as time-discrete approaches. The field of container management continues to be of great interest to him in order to continue previous scientific investigations, for example, the simultaneous optimization for entire part spectra.
In addition, he has extensive knowledge in the field of leveled production as well as holistic production systems in theory and practice due to his rich previous experience. Here, he also combines different disciplines, to, for example, calculate leveled production plans by applying so-called “vehicle routing” problems.
In his projects, it is always important to him to also keep the people in mind and to get everyone involved.
