The popular coffee capsules have an almost twice as bad climate balance as the coffee from the classic Italian espresso pot. More than 50 grams of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is produced per cup. Mainly responsible for this are the aluminum caps, even if one assumes a recycling of the aluminum, which is actually rarely the case. The studies were performed at the Institute of Industrial Ecology of the University of Pforzheim.

Learning the real object, was the motto for the students of the new program "Life Cycle & Sustainability", i.e. "Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability", which is offered in Pforzheim since the summer term of 2015. Several capsule coffee machines were disassembled and their components, as well as the consumption of coffee, water and electricity was analyzed. In a model calculation, the entire costs of the production of the materials were considered, as well as transport and disposal. The project took place throughout the summer term and touched several events, including lectures on LCA theory, on sustainable product development and software and database applications. The actual LCA was then conducted with the professional LCA software Umberto.

Details for the LCA are documented in two film clips of Baden TV and can be watched belowwww.youtube.com/INECundREM.
