Most of us have ordered from Amazon before. But have you ever wondered how it looks like behind the scenes? The MBA students had the chance to discover an Amazon fulfilment center, located just a stone’s throw away from Pforzheim University, first-hand. A company introduction and a guided tour introduced them into the world of logistics and online retail and how the online retail giant operates day by day.

Amazon was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Starting off as an online bookstore, Amazon now sells all kinds of goods, such as electronics, apparel, furniture, food and more. The internet-based retailer is the largest of its kind in the United States and in many other countries. Pforzheim is one of nine German Amazon fulfilment centers.

The MBA students were welcomed by Frédéric Penka, Senior Operations Manager at Amazon Pforzheim. He first introduced the company and then outlined its different leadership principles. Additionally, he enriched the students with the different career opportunities at the online retailer. One outstanding program Mr. Penka mentioned was the Pathways Program, especially designed for MBA graduates.

Afterwards, the students took off for a guided tour through the Amazon logistics center. Throughout the tour, everyone got to ask questions and therefore received new insights into the fascinating world of online retail.
